Multiple Sclerosis and Ayurveda –MS Healing Protocols
Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive, chronic, degenerative illness that affects the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This is expressed as intermittent damage to myelin - a fatty substance that surrounds and insulates nerve fibers and facilitates the conduction of nerve impulse transmissions - caused by the destruction of specialized cells that form the myelin.
This causes scarring and hardening (sclerosis) of nerve fibers usually in the spinal cord, brain stem, and optic nerves -which slows nerve impulses and results in weakness, numbness, pain, and vision loss.
MS often expresses by affecting different nerves at different times, improving in one place to appear elsewhere.
Symptoms include weakness, vision disturbance, Motor disturbance, sensory disturbance, Pain,loss of coordination and dizziness, Bowel, Bladder and Sexual Symptoms, sleep disorders ,cognitive disorders and many more
Managing MS with Ayurveda
In ayurveda we like to avoid characterizing or placing a label to a person, sometimes this can become a form of ego identification in which a patient can identify with the disease in order to define themselves, this often can become a barrier to wellness. So whether you have the illness or not, the first thing you need to work on is : Do not define or identify yourself with the illness. I know this sounds a bit strange as it relates to mind stuff, but Im sure you are aware on some level of how the mind is the ultimate seed generator of either health or illness.
Treatment of MS according to Ayurveda would be a long basis of treatment aimed at
The illness results in an autoimmune situation that often compromises the patients health, making them susceptible to easy infection.
There is strong evidence to suggest that a this illness is at least a good deal partly due to chronic depletion of a substance in ayurveda called Ojas.
OJAS is a concept in ayurveda that equates to the vitality, strength, immunity and power of life in an individual.
For those of you familiar with traditional Chinese medicine, - this would equate to Jing.
In addition it would seem that cross dosha aggravation is also at play –Vata Pitta and Kapha all disturbed, the primary aggravator would be Vata- these are the symptoms of Vata Aggravation:
• insomnia
• pain
• headaches
• constipation
• anxiety, worry and fear
• fatigue
• dry or rough skin
• poor digestion
• underweight
• heightened sensitivity
Ojas on its own is a massive subject but I will briefly touch upon this sublime ayurveda concept.
Dr Sumita Prajapati “Ojas is a Sanskrit word which literally means "vigor or Shakti which means Energy". According to the principles of Ayurveda , it is the essential energy of the body and when sufficient it is equated with immunity and, when deficient, results in weakness, fatigue, immune system related disorders like cancer, Crohns disease, HIV, Sarcoidosis, Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.” Ojas is both the gateway and the container. It is the gateway between consciousness and physiology, between spiritual and material. As the subtlest physical, it is a container. It contains the flow of cosmic energy (Prana) which is the life energy that performs respiration, oxygenation, and circulation. All motor and sensory functions are linked to prana from Atman through the individual.
Ojas is the first material expression of consciousness. It is both manifest and unmanifest. It pervades the body.”
Ojas is a refined essence(fluid) it is the material basis for all life. It influences our genetic constitution, vitality, power of presence-the power of our life and willpower, reproduction, growth and development, Spiritual attainment and longevity. It is the foundation for the production of Prana/Chi(Vital energy) and responsible for nurturing of the nerve tissues(brain,nerves,marrow etc)
Called essence, it is a mixture of sexual fluids(semen, menstrual fluid, vaginal excretions, saliva) sex hormones, hormones, adrenals, and biochemical fluids. Ojas is found all over the body but accumulates in all the organs but most particularly the kidney/adrenals organ where it is concentrated in the greatest amount
It nourishes the entire body (it has to do with growth and development)with vitality,– by stabilizing and preventing its loss, the cultivator aims to convert Ojas to Vital energy which will have the effect of stimulating health and spiritual development.
Ojas most closely affects immunity, mental health ,vitality, Life power, personal power, and directly affects longevity particularly with regard to the vital energy form of jing.
Ojas in laymans terms
In laymans terms Ojas would best be described as the biochemical nutritive component that nurtures your immune system, Mind/nerves and reproductive system, and bones(in fact it affects Everything but primarily those systems)-it is the most refined of your tissues, the most subtle expression of your bodys physical nature and its interface with consciousness itself, it is expressed partly as reproductive fluid in fact building up your level of Ojas is necessary in order to attain enlightenment or spiritual realization.
In MS it would seem that the ojas is depleted through various processes, in addition there is a build up of toxins, And a disturbance of their constitutional makeup. ( we often see marked improvement for MS sufferers when they detoxify)
The strength of Ayurveda in treating neurological disorders is globally appreciated.
Since it addresses the root cause of the issue the results are excellent.
Treatment would involve stress reduction therapies and practices:
6. Stimulate the building up of Ojas through diet and herbal tonics: Shatavari, Gokshura and Mustaa. Musta (Cyperus rotunda)
Some info on various herbs:
Musta- Properties and Uses: According to Ayurvedic tradition, Musta rhizome is a pungent, bitter, astringent, with carminative, stimulating, and alterative properties. It is also an emmenagogue, antihelmintic, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, vermifuge, demulcent, diuretic, and a galactagogue when applied externally. it is used to treat menstrual disorders, where it acts as a regulator in conditions such as dysmenorrhea, PMS emotionality, menstrual pain, and pre-menstrual congestion of blood and water. It is additionally used to treat menopause, palpitations, gastrointestinal yeast and candida, parasites, sluggish liver, indigestion, dysentery, loss of appetite, chronic fevers, gastritis, poor memory .
Musta is one of the best digestive stimulants for "Pitta" types and conditions, and it improves absorption in the small intestine, making it invaluable in the treatment of chronic diarrhea and malabsorption.
7. Daily Massage with Sesame seed oil, this will help to balance one of the primary agitators in the constitution(vata) it can be expensive to seek professional massage all the time, it may be wise to get a family member to help or to do self massage)
8. Supplements that may also help would be omega 3 supplementation, and vitamin e.
9. Shirodhara with potentiated oils(therapeutic oil pouring on the forehead, this is deeply relaxing to the CNS and profoundly rejuvenating. this plus all the above recommendations would go a long way to helping arrest the progression of MS and slowly reverse it.
10. Include daily consumption of pumpkin seed, and almonds.
.
Things to avoid:
• Gluten containing products ie bread, flour, oats etc – replace with basmati rice as a grain.
• Coffee
• Alcohol
• Refined sugar
• Margarine or other butter substitutes (replace with Ghee)
• Normal unorganic dairy- as milk contains antibiotics and growth stimulating Rgbh hormone which has been linked to increase of breast cancer.
Herbs suggested:
Mind and Nervous system
Musta –digestive stimulant- nervine tonic/rejuvenative –carminative
It is light, bitter, aromatic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, anthelminthic, galactogogue, emmenogogue and nervine tonic. It is found useful in diarrhoea with mucus. It is commonly given in fever. It cures kapha and pitta disorders, dyspepsia, vomiting, indigestion, thirst, worm troubles, cough, bronchitis, dysuria, and poisonus affections.

- Meditation would be primary, and should be practiced twice daily.
- Yoga postures(preferably from a yoga therapist)
- Breathing therapy(pranayama)
- Qigong
- TaiChi
- Establish a healthy routine and stick to it- a variable routine of eating and sleeping odd hours and eating variable amounts and meals will seriously compromise the persons ability to heal. Have 3 meals a day and get to sleep by 10 pm (if you battle with sleeping – exercise more during the day, try break a sweat. And take ½ teaspoon nutmeg 30 mins before bed)
- Detoxify the system- using a gentle and rejuvenative herb mix like triphala will provide good results without too much shock to the system. It has been shown that detoxification is crucial to MS treatment and the body responds better to the herbs after it has shed its toxic “load”.
- A Nervous system tonic :Yogharaj Guggulu – is a nervous system tonic as well as a digestive stimulant, this compound is almost always recommended for MS.- it is a Powerful Anti oxidant and immune stimulant. – it has detoxifying and laxative properties while calming the entire system.
- Improve the digestive power with the aid of herbs (Musta)
- Help the Nervous system with Nutritive nervines that stimulate the production of Ojas at the same time:
- a. Ashwaghanda,jatamamsi,vacha and Brahmi
- b. Shankpushpi (Clitoria ternatea)
- Properties and Uses: Commonly known as the "Butterfly Pea," Shankpushpi is used traditionally to treat nervous debility, insomnia, fatigue, low energy level.

The 5 Pillars of Good Health
Factors influencing a Healthy Balanced Lifestyle
The mother of all healing, not too much and not too little, Ideally It is best to get to bed before 10pm as this is when your digestive fires/ metabolism kicks in and can lead to a second wind of mental alertness. Postponing to past midnight damages the liver as it is the time your body cleanses the liver, if you are awake this cleansing does not occur.
Do not sleep past sunrise, it will:
If you suffer from insomnia here are some tips:
Eat according to your constitution (Dosha ie, Pitta, Vata, Kapha) and limit your portion size to about a palm size of protein and a palm size of good carbohydrates.
Allow 5 to 6 hours to pass between meals, without snacking at all, and not having sweetened drinks such as tea, coffee, or soft drinks.
Moderating your sex life is crucial for immunity and health; too much sex can deplete your reserves of vitality and compassion, peace of mind. Have the correct amount of Sex for your constitution.
Be aware that it is still very cold outside and dress appropriately, yet it is still a good time to begin a daily walking routine with some friends, or join a Yoga class. Ayurveda suggests that you exercise until you have perspiration appearing on the forehead back and arms and chest- this is easily achievable with a gentle amount of exercise such as Yoga, or a brisk walk. This is one of the most overlooked principles of the body, You are designed to clean out toxins in one of 3 ways (urine, feces, sweat) if you do not perspire you put an unnecessary burden on the kidneys and liver.
In this modern world meditation has become a vitally important tool in overcoming stress and stress related illnesses, it is well known to lower blood pressure and heart rate, the benefits of a calmer more balanced outlook on life are obvious, you treat other people better and can deal with life in a more effective manner. Meditation also brings great insight and presence, try to meditate twice a day(morning and evening), can also be effective before going to bed.(around 9pm)
The first place to start is to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle that supports optimum vitality and health, with this in mind there are 5 pillars of health I would highly recommend to get your life on the right track.
Sleep:
The mother of all healing, not too much and not too little, Ideally It is best to get to bed before 10pm as this is when your digestive fires/ metabolism kicks in and can lead to a second wind of mental alertness. Postponing to past midnight damages the liver as it is the time your body cleanses the liver, if you are awake this cleansing does not occur.
Do not sleep past sunrise, it will:
- Slow your metabolism quicker than anything and make you put on weight.
- Sleeping during the day will lead to depression over time.
If you suffer from insomnia here are some tips:
- Disengage from any work or entertainment that takes your attention off thinking(eg TV/Computers/Work at least 2 hours before bed, sit alone for a while and process your thoughts, Contemplation is neglected art in a society that has to be on the get-go constantly.
- Meditation a half hour before going to sleep helps me.
- In extreme cases or when you are still battling to meditate, you may take half a teaspoon of nutmeg (put it on your tongue) and then swallow it down with a glass of water, do this about an hour before sleep.
Diet:
Eat according to your constitution (Dosha ie, Pitta, Vata, Kapha) and limit your portion size to about a palm size of protein and a palm size of good carbohydrates.
Allow 5 to 6 hours to pass between meals, without snacking at all, and not having sweetened drinks such as tea, coffee, or soft drinks.
Sex:
Moderating your sex life is crucial for immunity and health; too much sex can deplete your reserves of vitality and compassion, peace of mind. Have the correct amount of Sex for your constitution.
Exercise:

Ayurveda suggests that you exercise until you have perspiration appearing on the forehead back and arms and chest- this is easily achievable with a gentle amount of exercise such as Yoga, or a brisk walk. The Benefits of a 30 minutes Daily walk
After enjoying a holiday full of overindulgence I decided its time to take health more seriously, too long have I been sedentary and sat behind a computer ignoring my declining health, rising blood pressure and expanding waist. - by the way im not alone, the modern lifestyle seems to be increasingly sedentary leading to many health complications. (Heart disease, High Blood Pressure, Obesity, Diabetes)
In light of the above I thought it a grand idea to help myself and others who have the same issues, I get lazy if I am relying on myself only(its so easy to switch off the alarm and go back to sleep if you are answering to yourself -self justification!!! argh. Its a different matter when we are counting on one another to be there and support each other to exercise.. so I decided its good idea to form a kind of club that provides this mutual support for health for free!.
There is so much hype and the health industry has become rife with selling lots of unnecessary weight loss supplements, which are downright dangerous, some of them boost your blood pressure in very unhealthy ways, if you have high blood pressure and are unaware of this and take the supplements(usually containing ginseng) you risk all the usual life threatening complications of High blood pressure(stroke,cardiac failure, liver damage etc not to mention the anger and bad mood)
The problem is we expect EVERYTHING to be COMPLICATED and HARD- Yet the truth is usually really simple!(ZEN)We get programmed day and night to believe we need Gyms, complex slimming programmes, Supplements and every home gym on the market in order to be healthy-Yet..
The truth is that its really easy to lose weight and become healthier, all it requires is consistent easy exercise and healthy eating choices.
I was doing some reading and found that with only 30 mins a day you get shockingly mind blowing results!
Here's a list of benefits
Lose weight
- during the light 30 minuite exercise of walking the body uses mainly fat to supply the energy- do the math!
1)Reversing insulin resistence
30 Mins walk will trigger the short twitch muscle fibres in your legs to process insulin properly- reversing the tendancy of pre-diabetic metabolic syndrome.(triggered by ascending insulin resistence/sedentary lifestyle)
this effect lasts for 48 hours.
2)Slows down Aging process
Insulin resistence is linked with aging reversing insulin resistence goes a long way to slowing down the aging process.
3)Lowers Blood preassure
high blood preassure, otherwise known as the silent killer, leads to increased risk of stroke, liver and kidney damage, reduced stress tolerance, heart disease etc.
4)Keeps weight off
30 minuites walk a day should help you lose weight gently and keep you from accumulating more fat from living a sedentary lifestyle.
5)Reduce risk of congestive heart disease by improving your cholestrol profile,(lowers your bad cholestrol)30% to 40% lower risk of heart disease in women, by reducing the deposit of plaque in your arteries.
6)Strengthening the bone structure
reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
7)Good for the Mind
self esteem and motivation will benefit, as well as a general elevation in mood.

Step 1 Determine your Constitution(Vata,Pitta,Kapha)
The first step towards health is self knowlege, knowing your original constitution according to the Ayurvedic theory is key in maintaining health, as you will know what activities to encourage, what things to avoid, your mental disposition and even your greatest mind challenges , even the predominant samskara that gave you incarnation.
the doshas are made of the 5 elements- Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
We all have the 3 doshas present in our make up, however the dominant dosha will express and determine your disposition or make up / way of engaging the world. determining your weaknesses and strengths at the same time.
Ayurveda uses a system of constitutional classification called the tri doshic theory, which is refers to the predominant elemental makeup of the person,
please note, although we have a predominant dosha, when im talking about aggravated vata, pitta or Kapha- you could be any constitution and have an imbalance or aggravated dosha that is NOT your constitution.
this imbalance /deviation from your natural genetic prakruti(constitution) is called your Vikruti(Movement away from your natural constitution) and this is disease.
Vata is made up of the 2 elements Ether and Air, affinities are for vibration and sound.
vata is about space,(akasha) and air, Prana- (Attachment desire/Anxiety Fear)
the attributes of Vata are
* Dry
* Rough
* Light
* Mobile
* Clear
* Cold
Vata temperament people will have a thin or slight build, they may be tall or short with a small bone structure,
they are given to excessive desire,lust, and are given to anxiety, and the predominant negative emotion would be fear.
vata has very low stamina and yet they are the people most addicted to active sports like jogging mountain biking etc.
they are predisposed to dryness in the colon leading to constipation, gas (air) they have a light build, rough skin or nails,(or tongue may look like a dry clay riverbed) - they also have cold hands and feet. the Mind of a vata has difficulty focussing -it is Mobile, jumps around a lot. Intelligence is high in the sense of Cram studying and they have a very high degree of Intuition, they can seem to pull information out of thin air(Akasha- actually its the ether)
In general Vatas require Grounding in order to keep balance.Vatas tend to aquire wealth and spend it frivoulously. Stress anxiety, fear. Mind
VATA DOSHA IS RESPONSIBLE
FOR 80% of ALL ILLNESS.
Pitta is made of Fire and water, and has affinities to Sight and intelligence - hotheads /pitta people need to blow off steam,
the attributes of pitta are:(Anger/Aversion/Hot blooded tends towards spreading name and fame of self(ego)
* sharp
* oily
* light
* hot
* fleshy smell
* spreading
Pitta individuals are known for their sharp wit, cutting sarcasm and anger, they are intelligent but get frustrated easily
their predominant negative emotion would be anger/rage and they have medium stamina, they are predisposed to heartburn, dihorrea, inflammatory diseases - Pitta is mainly present in the blood and in the digestive system .
Kapha elements are earth and water
attributes of kapha are
* heavy
* slow
* oily
* cool
* Dull
* dense
* liquid
* sticky
* sweet
Kapha people are generally sweet, nice people., given to attachment and clinging, slow to learn but once learnt its remembered forever.Kapha people have a large frame with large bone structure, they are physically the most dominating of the 3 doshas, with excellent stamina and vigour. although they tend to put on weight easily and need to exercise daily. slow and inertia - they hate exercise usually.
Karmic influences such as your predominant spiritual issue will influence your birth as a particular dosha.
Vata= Spiritual Challenge is Desire/lust/Attachment - an spiritually evolved(Sattvic) Vata will trancend this through renunciation.(UPEKSHA)
Pitta=Spiritual Challenge is Anger/aversion/Frustration - a sattvic Pitta will trancend this through going BEYOND wizdom and knowlege.
Kapha=Spiritual Challenge is Ignorance - a sattvic Kapha with transcend this through universal compassion and generosity
to determine your Prakruti(constitution) go here:Online Ayurvedic Dosha Questionairre
I will upload a series of questions that will help you determine how you have deviated from your natural constitution in a new page
called Vikruti.

Live According to Ayurvedic Principles- Support your Spiritual Growth
I am genuinely interested in healing others through showing a common sense lifestyle based on respect for self, others and the planet embracing spirituality and honoring the divine in all.
the core of this living philosopy is promoting a Sattvic lifestyle with responsibility for our daily decisions and actions.
The goal of this is ultimately good healthy communities and relationships and the spiritual goals(if inclined this way)is moksha(Liberation/Enlightenment) even without the spiritual goals the physical and emotional benefits are extremely beneficial and provides a beautiful working model for society.
Tools that are beneficial: Following a daily regimen of Exercise based on Diet ,Walking, Yoga, Pranayam(breath control) and Meditation, and where needed Ayurveda.- it is not enough to explain or talk of these principles it is in my experience only useful if you can provide a framework/living example where instruction and practice of these things is available daily. We are all just part of the world of Samsara, and i am a student too, i am no teacher just a fellow student of the path (Sadhana)
what i seek is to establish a community of like minded individuals who support each other in Sattvic lifestyle and support each other in daily practice.
Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in living the sattvic (Do daily Yoga/Pranayam/Meditation etc)lifestyle and wish to have support or joining me in performing daily yoga/exercise/ etc in the Lucan or dublin area. - oh and for free or if you choose you can provide dana when we decide to hire a hall.
Ayurvedic Therapist is my chosen profession, and it is also a part of my service to humanity and a spiritual practice for me, in this i believe in being open and transparent, if you need Ayurvedic therapy i adhere to the principle of aparigraha ie it is not my goal to become rich-, i limit my possessions and wealth accumulation to what is necessary for basic living expenses such as feeding my family and living withing the constraints of what is necessary,
I will not overcharge you for services with a greed or huge profit motive, the charge will be enough to be fair in exchange for my time,and to cover the cost of medication, if you are without means to pay i will do the ayurvedic treatment for a donation,(whatever is in your means) and if the medicine is too expensive i can often find the means to healing through lifestyle adjustment (which by the way is 95% of the cure)and common kitchen herbs and spices which can go a huge way towards healing you.
All herbs are only 5% of the cure, illnesses start in the mind and become manifest through our errors in thought(conciousness of the error), and how that plays out in our daily actions and choices. these manifest as poor lifestyle choices which lead to ill health and illness,
the ultimate cure is to fix the cause(the error in conciousness, this can only be achieved by meditation on the cause of your suffering) Contact me if you need help doing this.
Please note i can only give out medication after December, but lifestyle advice and practice are always free.
